Thanks to innovative fast chargers with built-in battery: Q8 enables fast charging without putting extra burden on power grid

Mobility player Q8 is introducing fast chargers that also work in places in the Netherlands and Belgium where the power grid is limited. Thanks to its cooperation with German company ADS-TEC Energy, Q8 is installing fast chargers with a built-in battery that gives up to 320 kW of charging capacity. The first four fast chargers were installed this week in the Netherlands. In Belgium, the first will soon be installed in Wommelgem. "This opens the door to fast charging stations in many more places", says Geert De Mil, Manager of Charging Technology at Q8.

In 2024 there were 127,908 new electric cars registered in Belgium (or 28.68% of the total number of cars), in the Netherlands there were 132,166 or 34.7%. In total, some 280,000 fully electric cars are now on the road in Belgium and 557,000 in the Netherlands. The demand for charging stations and especially fast charging stations in Belgium and the Netherlands is therefore increasing exponentially.

But installing these is often a major challenge. "In many places in our region, the capacity of the electricity network is limited and so a fast-charging station has not been possible until now. We therefore started looking for a solution where we are less dependent on the local power network", explains Geert De Mil.

Award-winning technology

Q8 found this solution with Germany's ADS-TEC Energy, with its award-winning, innovative battery technology. Via the compact battery that is built into the fast charging station, you can fast charge up to 320 kW without any additional load on the power grid. "This allows us to place fast charging stations even in locations with a limited power grid, without expensive investments in grid reinforcement or a transformer cabin", says Geert De Mil.

Another 7 fast chargers with battery this year

The first four fast chargers with this innovative battery were installed this week at the Dutch Tango stations of Brunssum, Elsloo, Maassluis and Vaassen. In Belgium, the first will be in Wommelgem. "And we are planning 7 more this year, spread throughout Belgium and the Netherlands," concludes Geert De Mil.
